In this video, well known survivalist Survival Lilly gives us a guided tour of her “minimalist survival pack”.

The pack itself is her home-sewn woolen blanket / sleeping bag, which means that she is getting more than one purpose out of the same item – which is a key technique for reducing the pack weight!

The first thing we see her do is set up her military poncho as a simple shelter, using some paracord. Once that is set up, she goes through the kit.

First up, the hatchet. Essential bush crafter tool, this is a lightweight hatchet and very versatile.

Next is a standard military canteen kit, with stainless steel cup with folding handle, wide mouth bottle and a stand that can be used for heating the canteen on a small fire.

Next, mosquito net. Don’t underestimate the importance of one of these. It’s literally a lifesaver and we should never forget that mosquito-borne diseases have been the death of more humans than just about any other cause throughout our history!

Quickly listing the rest of the items:

Folding toothbrush kit
Pack of tissues
Small first aid kit
DC4 small sharpening stone (love this!)
Bow drill bore, spindle and skateboard wheel
Altoids tin with fishing kit, windproof matches, slingshot ammunition, fishing line, dental floss.
Earplugs
Beanie hat
Shemagh

This is truly a minimalist kit. The first thing I would have added would be a roll-up foam pad. Sleeping on the forest floor with just a single layer of blanket is pretty hardcore for sure, but it’s not going to be fun in damp conditions or on stony ground.
