5. Silky Folding Saw
This lightweight folding saw is simple to use, portable and surprisingly versatile. CP recommends Silky for a low cost saw. Also on his list are the more Pocketboy or Zubat brands but these are higher ticket items.

8. Wax Wood Stick
Similar to fatwood. Super easy to carve shavings from it and it will light easily from a ferrocerium rod. You can get numerous fires started from one of these sticks so it’s an awesome lightweight backpack item. CP demonstrates a knife that has a ferrocerium rod insert that can be sparked from the back of the knife blade.
This awesome small flashlight is USB rechargable and bright for its size. It is super lightweight and robust. Really like this one – and so does everyone else by the looks of it, it sells like hotcakes!
10. Astronaut Vanilla Ice Cream Sandwich
Well this is a bit fun but is actually a real survival food. It’s freeze dried, tasty and the perfect item to pack for your next space adventure, let’s go!
Perfect EDC item. Won’t go soggy if it gets wet and can also double as tinder!
12. Cold Steel Spetznaz small shovel
Based on a Russian military shovel, this is a simple but very robust shovel that can double as a hatchet in a pinch. It’s a little on the heavy side but in being a bit on the beefy side is a good thing.
CP rates this highly for a low-cost camp knife. Also on his list is the Mora Companion.
A robust space blanket with a hi-vis orange side and grommets, enabling it to be used for rigging up a shelter.
Also by the same company is a heat reflective poncho.
The addition of magnesium adds a real kick in terms of fire starting ability as compared to a regular ferro rod.
16. Bear flare
Somewhat hard to obtain. Burns much brighter than a standard flare. It has a 1 minute burn time but also makes noise and works specifically as a bear deterrent.
