An American inventor named Walter Hunt was granted a U.S. patent in 1849 for his revolutionary safety pin, which was made from a single piece of wire. Since then, safety pins became a staple in every household.

Did you know that a safety pin has many uses in a survival situation? Once you finish reading this list of innovative uses for safety pins, you’re going to add a few “survival pins” to your survival kit. 🙂

1. Repairing clothing and gear.

Safety pins are used to temporarily repair garments and in the wilderness, you can use them in the same way. Use them to hold together the ripped strap from your backpack or temporarily close a tear until you can get them to the repair shop.

2. Fishing for dinner.

You can use a safety pin to go fishing. You can bend the pin into a hook shape and attach it to a line. Odds are you won’t be successful reeling in monstrous fish because the safety pin will bend. But for smaller fish it won’t be an issue.

3. Applying first aid.

Safety pins can be used in first aid. Pin the cuff of a long sleeve shirt to its chest to fashion a makeshift arm sling or it can be used to secure a bandana over a wounded and bleeding arm or leg.

4. Removing splinters.

The sharp end of the safety pin is ideal for removing splinters. Use an alcohol prep wipe first to clean both the pin and the skin around the splinter.

5. Keeping your belongings safe.

If you have a bug out bag or survival kit with flimsy zippers, you can use a safety pin to help fasten them together, helping to keep your gear safe. You can also use this trick if you want to keep your gear safe from thieves and pickpockets. This is ideal if you are using public transit or are out in a crowded area and you want to make sure that no one will be able to slide their hands into your bag.

6. Emergency lockpicking tool.

Legal use only, of course.

7. Scribe tool.

You can use the pin to make markings on hard materials – perhaps as an emergency writing instrument.

8. Drying clothes.

You can use the safety pin to hang them up.

9. Creating a squirt bottle.

Bet you didn’t think of this one. Making a small hole in the cap gives you an easy squirt bottle.

10. Zip tie shim.

In order to remove a zip tie without cutting it, you need something pointy to lift the tab so that it’s free to slide open. It just so happens that a safety pin works perfectly for this.
