THis inspiring video from Diego Footer shows us that it’s possible to generate a very healthy income with a smallholding.
It’s all about what you choose to grow… in conjunction with a huge and diverse skill set, by the looks of things. Michael Kilpatrick, the farmer running this operation, has been in the biz for a long time and ran a big production farm (15 acres of veg) with a team of 20 people, for 12 years.
We learn that not only growing skills but business skills are essential for such an outfit. A focus on learning “what really works” is critical. Neversink Farm, the subject of this video, is described by Kilpatrick as the most impressive farm of this scale that he has seen. Neversink pays great attention to their systems and to simplification of processes. Logistics, essentially – the make or break factor in many a business, in the end. “Setting yourself up for success” requires pre-planning and clear task structuring.
Another key factor is soil management. Soil is of course the backbone of the entire operation and the quality of the soil is critical.
Weed management at Neversink is described as “one of the cleanest farms he has ever seen”. Catching weeds before they go to seed will lead to reduced weed pressure in the following season. Very often, with an operation, attempts to scale the business and increase production by increasing the growing area lead to underperformance as the attention to management of the crops is diminished. So there is a “sweet spot” where you can fully stay on top of things. “If you see a rock or a weed in the field, pick it up.”
Everything does indeed look spotless and this is a revealing insight.
Tomatoes: “Greens are the winner” in terms of annual income generation, however the tomatoes give them a good run during the tomato cropping season. It’s interesting to note that despite the added overheads of growing tomatoes in the big greenhouse, it ends up being more profitable than growing them in the field. A 30×120 foot greenhouse, with correct early planting and everything done right, is estimated to generate $100k in a year.
I like the tomato grower’s approach. Fix the biggest problems first and do one thing at a time.

An amazing discovery in an abandoned house in Austin, Texas: A lost book of amazing survival knowledge, believed to have been long vanished to history, has been found in a dusty drawer in the house which belonged to a guy named Claude Davis.
Remember... back in those days, there was no electricity... no refrigerators... no law enforcement... and certainly no grocery store or supermarkets... Some of these exceptional skills are hundreds of years of old and they were learned the hard way by the early pioneers.
We've lost to history so much survival knowledge that we've become clueless compared to what our great grandfathers did or built on a daily basis to sustain their families.
Neighbors said that for the last couple of years Claude has tried to unearth and learn the forgotten ways of our great-grandparents and claimed to have found a secret of gargantuan proportions. A secret that he is about to reveal together with 3 old teachings that will change everything you think you know about preparedness:
