Here’s Canadian Prepper with a run-down of 13 (actually 15) unconventional items for your bugout bag or emergency kit. Most of these items are either inexpensive or you may have them already laying around at home!

A heavy gauge black garbage bag such as the “Husky” can be used for countless purposes. They can be cut open to create a fairly good sized plastic sheet.

3. Salt

A survival essential. Saline is used for wound cleaning and of course salt has electrolytes that are essential for survival.

4. Binoculars / Monocular

The most expensive item on the list, however you can get some pretty good ones for $20-$30 these days. Look for a larger objective lens diameter as this is possibly more important than the magnification. Night vision monoculars are

5. Caffeine Pills

If you are exhausted, a caffeine pill can keep you going for a while in a situation where you need that extra energy to push through or simply stay awake.

6. Gloves

Hard knuckle tactical gloves are an essential. Protecting the hands against cuts and other injuries is mission critical in a survival situation.

7. Headlamp

Freeing up both hands to see what you are doing can be extremely important in some circumstances.

8. Proof of ID

Your ID is of course an essential for travel and entry into certain restricted areas. Post-collapse, the ability to know who is who could be very valuable.

9. Breaching tools

Controversial – and I personally won’t recommend them for the obvious reason that they could be problematic in a stop ‘n’ search – but it’s undeniable that tools such as small bolt cutters and lockpicking tools can be especially useful in SHTF.

10. Physical Maps

GPS is great but if the infrastructure is out of commission, it becomes useless. A map is completely “self contained” and gives greater self reliance.

11. Toilet Paper Tablets

These pack extremely small and have a ton of uses.

12. A Good Saw

Folding saws are very efficient for dealing with firewood and much, much faster than using an axe.

13. Camouflage

Pick up some camouflage fabric and you have something you can deploy quickly to blend in to the wilderness.

14. Survival Shovel

A folding survival shovel is compact and has a ton of uses.

15. Cordage

CP recommends Titan Survivorcord and believes it superior to regular 550 paracord.
