This excellent video from TinHatRanch is a superb introduction to the concept of building your own “Bug Out vehicle”. This guy knows what he is talking about.

The concept behind a bug-out vehicle is that it is a vehicle that can enable you and your family to “get out of dodge” in the event of a disaster scenario. Such a vehicle has all terrain capability, plus is equipped with various tools and supplies to enable the occupants to be self-sustaining for an extended period of time.

The video is a full how-to that discusses many different types of build for different situations; it’s presented as a solution in the event of disaster but these techniques can be applied to converting a vehicle for use on a vacation, adventure or for an expedition. It’s not expected that your bug-out vehicle will only be used for bugging out; it should be an all-purpose vehicle that has great utility at all times.

If there was a major national disaster, major roads would soon become gridlocked – and having a well-equipped off-road vehicle would be a massive advantage.

Your starting point for creating a bug out vehicle is choosing an appropriate machine to be your starting base. A true 4 wheel drive with low range, differential lock, solid axles and good ground clearance is essential. It should ideally be something that is fairly commonplace and for which spares are easy to find.

Ground clearance is mission critical. A good approach and departure angle will permit going over bigger obstacles. All this is explained in greater detail in the video.

Essential add ons include a sturdy roof rack and a winch. A winch will give you great ability to pull the vehicle out if stuck and potentially rescue other vehicles.

The presenter even explains some technical aspects of changing vehicle tyres and suspension in an easy-to-understand and entertaining way and will help you to find the right balance of modifications for better off-road performance.
