Here’s a video from TinyHouseGiantJourney about a couple who converted an army truck into a home on wheels. This is a pretty serious rig and you can see why it was called the “apocalypse tiny home”!
The basic truck + chassis is known as an “FMTV” (“family of medium tactical vehicles”) and the military uses this as the basis for 14 different vehicles. They are ideally suited to overlanding because this is a common vehicle for which spare parts can be obtained worldwide – a definite factor to consider if overlanding!
The truck also has CTIS (central tire inflation system) which is used to adjust tire pressures for various terrains. Softer PSI’s in general are used on softer ground to spread the “footprint” and increase the grip. We learn that the truck only does 5 to 6 miles per gallon – so let’s hope that after the apocalypse there isn’t a diesel shortage. 😉
You don’t realize how monstrous these trucks are until you learn that one wheel weighs over 400 pounds and needs to be lowered from the spare wheel storage container by use of a hydraulic system!
On this incredibly rugged bed one can see some of the fairly typical modern motorhome equipment – cartridge toilet instead of blackwater tank, 60 gallon cold water tank.. and 3 methods of heating hot water those reliable long showers…
The interior of the cab was insulated with Dynamat, felt and carpet, which makes a huge difference to the noise suppression in what would typically be very noisy driving conditions.
1700 watts of solar panels on the roof are set up on a slider, so that some of them can be pushed across to make space for a fantastic rooftop deck.
The interior is really ‘industrial chic’. Stainless steel everywhere! It might not be everyone’s style but it sure is functional and is going to be extremely durable.
Dual slideouts create quite a grand living space, but the clincher is the king sized bed on a hydraulic system, which can be elevated up out of the way during the daytime. This of course makes a massive difference to the living area. I mean, this is so well thought out it’s incredible. The motors are independent so that even if the truck is not parked on a level, the bed can be leveled!!
Another clever feature is the large industrial sink, with a custom sliding cutting board. It’s genius, honestly.
And then the military hot water pot that is right next to the bed so that you can make that morning cup of tea while still horizontal. I’m laughing because these guys really know what’s up!
And on it goes. So many brilliant design touches that are incredibly functional.
But the final impression that we are left with is that this is a couple that knows how to live well and they have made a real commitment to doing that, above all else. The whole thing is an inspiration.

An amazing discovery in an abandoned house in Austin, Texas: A lost book of amazing survival knowledge, believed to have been long vanished to history, has been found in a dusty drawer in the house which belonged to a guy named Claude Davis.
Remember... back in those days, there was no electricity... no refrigerators... no law enforcement... and certainly no grocery store or supermarkets... Some of these exceptional skills are hundreds of years of old and they were learned the hard way by the early pioneers.
We've lost to history so much survival knowledge that we've become clueless compared to what our great grandfathers did or built on a daily basis to sustain their families.
