Here’s a very interesting video from Exploring Alternatives about a man who lives full time in a Toyota Tacoma and Big Horn III tent with a woodburning stove. He’s survived temperatures down to -24º in that tent and I am sure the stove keeps it toasty.
He made the decision to be a “digital nomad” – making money from his own Youtube channels and taking everything he owns with him on the road. He’s a true “lone wolf” and anticipates being out there for another 25 years! He seems perfectly content out in the mountains, enjoying solitude – with his trusty canine companion of course.
Toyota Tacomas are great trucks and the old ones are a ‘cult classic’. They are incredibly durable and havae very good off road capability with true 4WD, low range and diff lock. However they are not so big – which has its pros and cons. Con of course is the cramped space, however Brian has built a custom slide-out for the camper shell to give himself more room. I have friends who take their Tacoma on the road in the summer and just sleep in the back. It’s a great way to go.
Brian gives us a rundown of the survival gear he takes with him. He keeps it minimal. He describes his MSR Guardian water purifier, which enables him to pump water out of any stream and he’s all set. He has 200W of solar panels and this charges a 101Ah lithium ion battery.
For connectivity he uses an unlimited data plan from Netbuddy. Check out my tutorial on off grid internet.
Brian dispels the myth that you need a ton of cash to buy a super fancy, expensive rig and he says “You just gotta hit the road”. He recommends that you start off by doing short trips – going away for a few days at a time to get your setup dialed in. He also advises that you sell your stuff and unburden yourself before you go. And that’s really what this lifestyle is all about – unburdening yourself. Throwing off the idea of “Keeping up with the Jones’s” and he’s thrilled with getting rid of all that.
“Instead of chasing things, I’m chasing experiences.”

An amazing discovery in an abandoned house in Austin, Texas: A lost book of amazing survival knowledge, believed to have been long vanished to history, has been found in a dusty drawer in the house which belonged to a guy named Claude Davis.
Remember... back in those days, there was no electricity... no refrigerators... no law enforcement... and certainly no grocery store or supermarkets... Some of these exceptional skills are hundreds of years of old and they were learned the hard way by the early pioneers.
We've lost to history so much survival knowledge that we've become clueless compared to what our great grandfathers did or built on a daily basis to sustain their families.
Neighbors said that for the last couple of years Claude has tried to unearth and learn the forgotten ways of our great-grandparents and claimed to have found a secret of gargantuan proportions. A secret that he is about to reveal together with 3 old teachings that will change everything you think you know about preparedness:
