One of my all-time favorite documentaries. In under an hour, this magically crafted video by Northmen captures the essence of an entirely traditional country way of life through the four seasons. It’s amazing to learn that there are people who still live in the way their ancestors did, without the interference of the modern world.
Well into his seventies, “Grandfather” remains strong and active as he cares for the animals on his farm and patiently carries out all of the everyday tasks that support this fascinating way of life that many of our ancestors lived. Do you think you could keep up with his level of endurance? You will be captivated by the man’s profound, selfless devotion to his work. Day in, day out, taking care of the animals, the land… and producing single-handedly what seems to be enough food to feed an entire community!
This is self-reliance on a level beyond what you are used to seeing. No pretense, no frivolity. Just hard work and calm focus, from dawn to dusk. We could all learn much from this.
We have a chance to see how many seemingly difficult operations, even logging, can be handled with efficiency and humble skill by one old man in partnership with a horse using basic equipment. Virtually everything in the video will teach us something about how people can live on the land without using powered machines – from bee-keeping to ploughing, tapping birch sap, vegetable growing, scything and a whole lot more.
Many of the old skills and methods have almost been lost – but there is now a resurgence of interest in them. Videos like this one are the perfect way to preserve the old ways for anyone who wants to learn; seeing someone who has a long lifetime of experience will surely help. This is a rare insight into history and, even if you don’t want to live on the land, it’s a very rewarding watch!
