Building ‘The Forest Cube’: A Tiny 64 Sq ft. House On Stilts!

This video from Modern Self Reliance features a truly tiny house – measuring just 64 sq ft – which is 8 foot by 8 foot. This is not the main home; it’s a “guest suite” on stilts and there’s an amusing reference to getting guests that snore out of the main cabin!

This fun project is a fairly simple build that could potentially be undertaken by a DIY’er and it’s documented in such a way that you could use it as an instruction tutorial for creating your own. He’s clearly experienced, but having said that, I have to say that I take issue with some of his techniques and his freewheelin’ approach to safety. It’s all fun and games until it isn’t… and if you take a cavalier approach then it’s just a matter of time: I’ve worked on homes – and there were a few things here that raised my eyebrows; I would be concerned about working 8 feet up in the air without any guard rails whatsoever preventing a fall – which can be seen in some of the shots. It only takes one misstep and you could end up with a serious injury.

I wouldn’t dream of doing something like this without a proper scaffold tower. Fortunately we see one in some of the other pics. I have my own scaff tower and when installed correctly – with a guard rail – it beats the heck out of working on a ladder and it just feels overall much safer.

Also I found his use of a chainsaw to cut out the doors somewhat entertaining. It’s not what I would use and I have to say I wouldn’t advise it. But there are just some guys who are “chainsaw everything” and if that’s you, it’s you. I would prefer to measure up, use a track saw and make all my cuts at ground level before moving the finished piece into position.

This project provoked a lot of discussion in the comments from various critics, some of whom were better qualified to hold forth than others, on the techniques and materials used. It was interesting to read the arguments about whether nails were better than screws. Having done work on foundations of timber homes, I absolutely do not agree with him on the claim that screws do not have as good a structural shear strength as nails. It depends on the screws and depends on the nails!

The modern high-strength screws developed by the manufacturers of the joist hangers (i.e. Simpson Strong Tie – check out the Amazon reviews!) are engineered to work in specifically in conjunction with the timber, are load rated and commonly specified by engineers for “real” construction projects with far higher loads than the ones we see here. Certainly, don’t use drywall or cheapie screws for load bearing applications. Personally, I would use (and have used) Simpson all the way – but I can’t make any recommendations other than to observe code requirements in your region!

It's already begun. Ask the farmers in California. They know.

Every survivalist knows that water is of critical importance. You NEED an independent water source that you can count on!

As an interesting "survival rehearsal" - imagine that you turned the tap on right now and nothing came out. How long would you last?

But what if there was another water source literally hidden in plain sight. That's right, I'm talking about the atmosphere!

The amazing thing about getting water from the natural moisture in the air... is that it is ALWAYS available.

This gives you real water security!

😳 What Tinnitus Does To Your Brain Cells (And How To Stop It)

After 47 years of studies and countless brain scans done on more than 2,400 tinnitus patients, scientists at the MIT Institute found that in a shocking 96% of cases, tinnitus was actually shrinking their brain cells.

As it turns out, tinnitus and brain health are strongly linked.

Even more interesting: The reason why top army officials are not deaf after decades of hearing machine guns, bombs going off and helicopter noises…

Is because they are using something called "the wire method", a simple protocol inspired by a classified surgery on deaf people from the 1950s...

Lost Ways Of Survival Video

An amazing discovery in an abandoned house in Austin, Texas: A lost book of amazing survival knowledge, believed to have been long vanished to history, has been found in a dusty drawer in the house which belonged to a guy named Claude Davis.

Remember... back in those days, there was no electricity... no refrigerators... no law enforcement... and certainly no grocery store or supermarkets... Some of these exceptional skills are hundreds of years of old and they were learned the hard way by the early pioneers.
