In this video by Off Grid With Curtis Stone we learn how to start a farm with a small amount of money.

Taking a $5,000 budget, Curtis chooses the essentials he would spend that money on, with the goal being to generate some profit which can then be used to expand the business. Getting it airborne is the first priority!

Starting on a small budget enables you to test the marketplace and forces you to make good decisions. It can actually work out better than “starting with too much money”, which can often kill a project due to careless decisions. Curtis started his own farm with $7,000 but admits that some of that money ended up being wasted – so he’s helping you avoid those mistakes.

Curtis focuses on producing high value crops on a small plot. The yard behind him is 2000 sq ft and he states confidently that you can generate $20,000 in a growing season – so long as you grow the right things. He lets us in on his choices: Salad greens, fine herbs and baby root vegetables. He also has further videos listing his most profitable crops.

We learn that he sells to restaurants and farmers markets. Going direct to customers this way of course maximises profits.

With a small plot he states that you don’t need expensive machine tools and can do things by hand – however, when we get on to the tools and equipment section we learn that the “post-harvest area” is the most important place on the farm. Washing, drying, storing, weighing and packing are critical parts of the process.

A walk-in cooler is an absolute essential and is one of the major expenses – estimated cost around $1000. However many of his tools are home-made: We also see an interesting washing table – which looks home made. It’s simple – using 2x4s and 1/2″ galvanized steel mesh. It has a liner underneath that catches the water, which is then used for watering. A bubbler is a washing station for vegetables that uses a jacuzzi pump to swirl the water, which cleanses the veg. Next we see giant salad-spinners made from old Maytag washing machines!

Another essential is the quick-cut greens harvester that “turns 8 hours work into 45 minutes work”. The cost is around $500 to $700.

Next up, a wheeled seed planter. Cost very variable, between $100 and $600.

Finally we see a set of hand tools, including a shovel, bed rake, digging fork, stirrup hoe and a standard rake. On a small plot, you can do it with these, and avoid the expense of a roto-tiller.
