1: Change All The Locks

When you move into a new place, you simply do not know who might have a key. “Keys in the wild” could be anywhere. Don’t risk it. Yes, it’s a bit expensive but it is worth changing ALL the locks.

2: Check For Plumbing Leaks

Look for stains that would indicate damp, or wrinkles in flooring or other materials that would suggest water damage.

3: Get Rid Of Pests

Now that the previous occupants have cleared all of their junk out, it’s a good time to check for “signs” of rodent infestations.

4: Check The Main Water Valve

Super essential to know where it is! If there is a water leak you want that water turned off asap, not to be hunting for the stopcock while the place is flooding…

5: Steam The Carpet

It’s amazing how many people don’t do this when they move out. It’s also the perfect time to do it before bringing any furniture in, as it’s the one time when the rooms are bare and the whole carpet is exposed.

6: Change The Toilet Seat

Well, you don’t know what’s happened to it in the past but I think honestly a thorough clean and disinfect should suffice.

7: Change All The Air Filters

Certainly check them. If they look brand new then of course it’s all good but an old filter may prevent the filtration system from working correctly.

8: Monitor Readings Of Electricity And Water Meters

Oh yes. I forgot this one once and the “estimate” given by the electric company of what they thought I owed was rather on the high side…

9: Locate The Circuit Breaker Box

If the circuit breaker trips one night and you don’t know where the breaker box is, you are going to have fun trying to find it in the dark! 😉

10: Clean The Heating And Cooling Systems

This is of course a professional task, check with service providers in your area.

11: Register A P.O. Box And Keep Your New Address Private

Super important in the modern age where you could be targeted via research.

12: Identify Emergency Exits

Excellent choice. I’d go further and suggest to rehearse an emergency situation with your family and make sure everyone knows what to do.
