Here’s an detailed video from CityPrepping about what to do in the event of a disaster that is sufficiently bad that help is not on the way and you are looking at potentially weeks of having to fend for yourself.
First things first, remember the saying “fail to prepare = prepare to fail”. When it all goes down, remember that the majority of people will be shocked, confused and uncertain as to what to do. If you have an emergency plan mapped out, you have a clear advantage because when everyone else has lost their heads, your training and plans will give you steps that you can “just follow”.
Here are the 10 fundamental steps as listed in the video:
1. Establish comms with family and trusted contacts
Have a plan in place that includes more than one means of communication – for example if mobile phone network goes down. Have a backup systems.
2. Assess the situation
Assemble your team, form a plan and make a decision as regards bugging in or bugging out. Bugging out is a last resort that should be undertaken when your HQ is compromised or in serious danger.
3. Get home or to bugout location
Bugging out, if surrounded by numerous others attempting to do the same, can be fraught with danger and problems. Roads may become impassable or jammed with insane traffic jams.
4. Secure your location
As the saying goes, society is only three meals away from anarchy. In a true disaster, people can get desperate. Can you protect your home and your family?
5. Observe OPSEC
Opsec means “operational security”. In this context, it means maintaining privacy as regards your conditions. Advertising the fact that you have significant supplies could be very dangerous.
6. Blend in as much as possible
Be “the grey man”. Try not to stick out. Also – as the saying goes “Beware the fat man in a skinny land”. Don’t signal wealth unnecessarily.
7. Gather as much intel as possible
Gather information and stay up to date with the current conditions as best as possible. Radio and other forms of connectivity are vital and don’t be caught off guard because you didn’t pay attention to what is coming.
8. Avoid going out into crowds
In a true SHTF situation, mobs can be dangerous. Running out to get panic supplies at the last minute can be dangerous and you should be prepared in advance.
9. Focus on sheltering in place for 2-3 weeks
If you had to stay in your house for the next few weeks without venturing outside – could you do it?
10. Decide the next steps
In an extreme scenario, the “world as we know it” might not be coming back. In such circumstances, big decisions as to your next steps will be critical and will need to be based on the present circumstances. Your choice of location and many other factors will be fundamental to long term survival.
