In this interesting short “no talking” video, the super-inspiring Dutch Farmer gives us a quick demo of his no-dig gardening method in his carefully laid-out vegetable plot. He harvests one crop and then another one goes in right away. Timing is everything!
For those not familiar with no-dig gardening, you would think that the landscape would be a jungle of weeds, but that’s not the case – because of the use of mulch – a covering that suppresses weeds and retains moisture, creating excellent growing conditions for the crops.
As compared to the traditional method of plowing / digging, no-dig gardening has the benefit of being less work! There are also ecological and soil health benefits, which translates to more nutritious produce.
First we see our Dutch Farmer starting his seeds in trays. 30 days later, they are ready to plant out. Taking a final crop of what looks like french beans from the plot and clearing the remaining vegetation (nice snack for the chickens!) he then simply rakes the bed over quickly and it’s ready for action. Rolling a simple seed-row-making tool (no idea what it’s name is) over the bed creates indented horizontal rows that are perfect for planting out what looks like baby lettuce.
The whole process is streamlined and efficient and the crops are irrigated with sprinklers and drip lines. You can see that the entire smallholding is carefully planned and methodical – there’s nothing haphazard about it.
The Dutch Farmer has a total of 40 videos on his channel (it’s amazing to have picked up 300k followers from a small set of videos like this, which highlights the quality of his work!) that highlight a brilliant approach to sustainability and living off the land.
