6 Extra Ways To Help Your Garden Withstand Drought
There are plenty more things you can do in order to help you get through a drought:
1. Mulch
Mulch will not only retain moisture but will also protect the soil underneath from being baked by the sun. Mulch also suppresses weeds which of course would ‘steal’ some of the moisture from the plants you want to grow! You may wish to avoid using plastic sheet as this can heat up the ground.
2. Collect rainwater
Assuming of course that your region doesn’t have some crazy laws prohibiting this – a rainwater barrel system can collect a large amount of water and provide a very valuable source when things get dry.
3. Reuse greywater
We throw away gallons of usable water daily. Water from showering, hand washing and dish washing can be collected / diverted to the garden.
4. Drip irrigation
One of the benefits of a drip irrigation system is that it can deliver water precisely where it is needed and keep soil moist on an ongoing basis. If watering is done “all at once”, much of that water runs off and is wasted. The same volume of water, delivered gradually, will result in more of the water going to the plant and less going to waste.
5. Raised beds / retaining walls
A solid barrier in the ground will retain moisture and help keep it in the garden.
6. Time your planting
Getting your veg started earlier will increase yields and enable you to get some crops in before late summer drought conditions kick in. Depending on your climate, you may be able to grow late, into the fall and prior to winter.
