Here’s a useful video tutorial from Wranglerstar “Modern Homesteading” – which dives into the topic of creating the most useful possible survival kit that can be packed into an Altoids tin and picked up from Walmart.
Fun challenge! The kit is divided into three categories – first aid, tools and fire starting.
He ended up buying a whole basket of stuff (yay for consumerism) but did actually manage to get everything packed into the tin.
Here’s a rundown of the kit contents: (links are Amazon affiliate links)
1 Alcohol wipe
2 Band aid
Neosporin in a straw (label it!)
1 Q tip
Miniature Victorinox Swiss Army Knife (there are so many to choose from!)
Miniature flashlight (1.3 inch! Love it, this one is an amazing example!)
“Survival Card” tool
Singer upholstery needles (super strong!)
Pencil (cut short)
Small roll of wire
Fishing kit in a straw – Safety Pinhooks, weights, baits (marshmallow?)
Gorilla tape – rolled onto a small tube / card etc
Ferro rod – fire steel
3 Stormproof matches
Cotton balls with petroleum jelly (in a straw)
There it is! What else would you have included?
Rather than that nasty looking suture needle I would have chosen 3M STERI STrip Skin Closures – which I have found far easier to use and got amazing results holding a cut closed. Not medical advice.

An amazing discovery in an abandoned house in Austin, Texas: A lost book of amazing survival knowledge, believed to have been long vanished to history, has been found in a dusty drawer in the house which belonged to a guy named Claude Davis.
Remember... back in those days, there was no electricity... no refrigerators... no law enforcement... and certainly no grocery store or supermarkets... Some of these exceptional skills are hundreds of years of old and they were learned the hard way by the early pioneers.
We've lost to history so much survival knowledge that we've become clueless compared to what our great grandfathers did or built on a daily basis to sustain their families.
Neighbors said that for the last couple of years Claude has tried to unearth and learn the forgotten ways of our great-grandparents and claimed to have found a secret of gargantuan proportions. A secret that he is about to reveal together with 3 old teachings that will change everything you think you know about preparedness:
