In this video from Back To Reality Youtube channel, a couple creates a new permaculture garden from scratch on their property.

There are various methods and systems for permaculture gardens – and this one is known as the “Back To Eden” method – which specifies using wood chips as a sheet mulch. You essentially cover the ground in a layer of organic matter (hay, straw, leaves, etc).

The layer of organic matter has numerous benefits – suppressing weeds, preventing evaporation and adding nutrients as the mulch begins to break down. Mulch builds soil!

First a layer of natural paper or cardboard is put down – which will help smother weeds. The cardboard is held in position by stones.

Next, put down a few inches of natural compost (typically from your compost pile). Then, finally add the layer of wood chips. Our video makers found a giant pile of free woodchips available locally online, from someone who had been doing some tree work.

When it comes time to plant, you can just push away the wood chips and put your plants in – that’s it!

One of the added benefits of this system is that there is actually much less work involved than with regular garden digging. “Nature doesn’t dig, it covers”. Another benefit of the mulch layer is that it keeps the soil from drying out, minimizing watering.

So you can see that overall this is a fantastic gardening system that leads to healthy, nutrient rich soil, with far less work than ordinary gardening!
