Here’s an interesting video from The Outsider that leads us through the building of a simple 10′ x 10′ log cabin in a cold climate. The project is reported to have taken 8 months and used 52 logs.

It’s interesting to learn that the builder had no previous construction experience – but studied a bunch of tutorials and ‘learned as he went along’. This illustrates that a log cabin is a project that many people could undertake! He had volunteer assistance from his local church and scout group.

The logs were fitted together using a simple square notch as opposed to a saddle notch. The floor is seriously thick – using 2 1/4″ rough cut poplar. We can see that there are some man-made materials – for example the tarp roof. Plywood and 2x4s are used judiciously where needed, for example in the sub floor.

The real excitement is learning that the cabin cost under $500. I’m happy to learn that – and I much prefer this “low tech” approach, as opposed to buying an overpriced ‘tiny house’. Low cost housing is something that can really free you to enjoy living rather than slaving way at some job you hate just to hand the money over at the end of the day.

Sourcing reclaimed windows is a fantastic way to save money. There are always mountains of these available at reclamation yards.

The loft space is accessed via a rudimentary ladder that looks like it is build from 2×4 pieces. If you are attempting to make a ladder like this, I would use screws not nails. While the ground floor is 10’x10′, the overhang of the loft space over the front door makes it 10’x16′.

Overall, a cabin like this would make a great forest hideout for camping adventures and escaping from the busy world for a while but it would need much more in the way of facilities if it were to be used for long stays. There’s no running water, no shower, no toilet, no electrics; but given time, investment (and perhaps a bigger cabin) you could of course put these things in.
