Air plants are both fascinating and low maintenance! They refer mainly to the species Tillandsia and are epiphytes, also called “aerophytes”, which means that they can survive with no soil, using their leaves to take moisture from the air and nutrients from dust and by photosynthesis. Amazing stuff!
If you lead a busy life (and I think that’s true for most of us!) it can mean that your houseplants occasionally get neglected… so an air plant could be the perfect choice! Houseplants make a useful contribution to the aesthetics of our homes as well as improving the air quality so it’s helpful to have them around.
The simple tutorial we discovered (link at the end) will tell you all you need to know to set up an eye-catching hanging display at a very low cost, which is ideally suited to the warm humid environment of the bathroom – it will provide your home with an unusual talking point for sure!
The basic idea can be modified to use any small container – we like the featured example that uses bottle tops as it gives an opportunity for upcycling something that would otherwise be discarded. Kids will love this project too – why not have a look around the house to see what you can find?
Air plants open up endless possibilities to add a unique feature to your home decor – they can be mounted on pretty much anything! A quick search for air plant containers online shows up all sorts of wonderful ideas – I like the idea of using large sea shells as this gives the impression that the plant and shell are part of the same living being.
When preparing your containers to hang it might be better to drill a hole, rather than use a nail as the tutorial suggests, to avoid the possibility of cracking them, especially if you use a hard plastic or another brittle material.
In many countries it is illegal to take plants from the wild – this could leave you facing a hefty fine for doing so. More importantly, it can cause damage to the local ecosystem so we would advise buying them from an ethical vendor such as a garden centre or specialist supplier.
Many Tillandsia species also produce off-shoots readily so if you have a friend who grows some, you could obtain them this way. There are over six hundred species of Tillandsia out there!
