We discovered a fantastic list of gardening tips will surely turn up something new, even for experienced gardeners! If you’re new to gardening, taking the first steps often produces mixed results and could leave you feeling like it’s a lot of effort for not much return. The 101 tips are distilled from the writer’s 50 years of gardening experience so you can really learn a lot in a short time! The link follows at the end of the article, after our introduction to the topic.

There is a strong focus on organic and environmentally sound principles in these tips, such as encouraging wildlife into your garden to reduce the number of garden pests without using chemicals and collecting rainwater to use for watering. There are a few non-organic methods mentioned too but with so many tips to choose from, organic gardeners won’t miss out.

One of my favourite discoveries here is the idea of growing your own loofah (or “luffa”) to use in the kitchen or bathroom – if you live in a sunny climate, you can grow this natural sponge at home! We have provided a link below that tells you how to do it.

One of the keys to a successful garden is choosing the right plants for the conditions you have. There are many possible variations in soil and light so make sure you do some research for the best results. Planting near trees is unlikely to give good crops – trees give shade and remove a lot of water and nutrients from the soil. Did you know that a mature tree can use up to 15 gallons of water per hour on a hot day? Many conifer trees drop needles that contaminate the soil and prevent other plants from growing at all!

You will almost certainly have to improve the fertility and water retaining properties of your soil by incorporating compost and other organic matter – this needs to be done primarily before planting but mulches can be used at other times.

Vertical gardening is a great way to save space, allowing crops to ripen more quickly and it keeps them safer from pests. Containers can be used on any paved area to increase the available space for growing food.
