A DIY raised garden bed project is an interesting and convenient way to take your gardening to the next level. It allows you to produce higher yields from less effort, protect crops from weeds, facilitate great drainage, promote optimal sun exposure, make the most of limited soil/space, and reduce the strain on your wallet.
The benefits seem straightforward — so let’s have a tutorial on how to build a raised garden bed with wood. OYR Frugal & Sustainable Organic Gardening highlights an easy and cheap design to take your raised bed game to the next level.
Constructing The Raised Garden Bed Structure
While you can use virtually any material to build your raised garden bed, it’s advisable to use wood for several reasons. Construction is easy, it requires minimal maintenance, it’s aesthetically pleasing, it’s easy to work with and it’s relatively portable.
But not just any type of wood, OYR suggest using building lumber rather than fence boards – i.e., they’re stronger, more durable, and don’t require posts. The sides of the garden bed are constructed with 2×10’s with a 2×4 shelf that both supports the structure and offers a makeshift sitting bench.
When choosing the lumber, you need to consider how long it lasts, the cost, and safety. The general rule of thumb is to steer clear of treated wood due to the risk of the chemicals leaching to the soil. As for the type of lumber, some viable options include Locust, Redwood (long lasting but expensive!), Cedar, and Douglas Fir (cheapest option – but will not last as long).
Building the raised beds starts of course with identifying an ideal location for them. You’ll want a spot that’s on level ground and under direct sunlight. The next step is to prepare the ground by pulling any weeds and loosening up the ground. From there you can assemble the bed, line it with cardboard, and add soil. The video illustrates the construction process in detail. What will you grow in yours? 🙂
