In this inspiring video from Michigan Backwoods we see the creation of a beautiful guest cabin that’s truly “out there” – over a mile from the nearest road! There was no full-size vehicle access so they had to use an ATV with a trailer to bring in the materials. Sounds like a fun adventure!
When you see the finished cabin it’s not surprising that this video ‘blew up’ on YT and got millions of views – it’s gorgeous both inside and out. It’s also in an idyllic natural setting. The perfect spot to spend summer nights and have fun adventures away from it all.
Being nowhere near road access, the cabin of course is not close to an electrical supply, so it’s entirely powered from solar power. The solar power setup is a simple small setup with 2 x 100W panels, a charge controller (essential), deep cycle batteries and LED lighting which has a lower power use. It looks like they are not running an inverter and are using 12v lighting (but one could be added).
The solar setup cost less than $1000 and, not running much in the way of appliances, batteries were at 70% even after staying in the cabin for a week. He’s used 12v “cigarette lighter to USB” power outlets to give guests a way to charge their phones.
We’re taken step by step with a photo journal and explanation of the methods – which appear to be orthodox USA construction methods with 4×2 framing, OSB sheeting for wall panels with a membrane wrap. It’s a “proper build” using mostly manufactured construction materials as opposed to scavenged, wild harvested or recycled materials. Some machine tools were used for the construction. 4 foot holes were dug for post foundations.
The roof looks to be corrugated metal sheeting with a generous overhang to create a good-sized covered front porch.
Inside there are bunk beds, table, armchairs, a loft space and a wood burning stove – with a heat-protective layer (important) behind it to protect the wall. This is covered with pebbles which I am guessing might have been a ‘found material’!
The kitchen doesn’t have any applicances but a basic countertop and cabinets with a simple Coleman stove and coffee maker. I’m assuming that running water isn’t an option here – so I guess this means you are bringing your own water to wash dishes. The first upgrade I think I would do would be a 12V fridge / cooler… though you would have to calculate your power consumption and adjust the size of your solar setup if required.
