This sensational video from Martijn Doolaard documents his adventures purchasing a gorgeous property in the Italian Alps – a plot of mountain land with incredible views and, as the title indicates, two beautiful, rustic stone cabins. We can see the date – 1903 – inscribed on the wall of one of them. The cabins are at 1200m altitude (3930 feet)
There’s a ton of work to do on a property like this. It’s a workout right from the start, because even with a 4WD vehicle he can’t get right down to the buildings – so he’s carting supplies, tools and belongings down to the buildings by wheelbarrow. The fact that access is difficult is in one sense a disadvantage but in terms of peace and tranquility, it’s a big win…
The good news is that the stone structure of the buildings looks to be in extremely good shape. The local stone is well suited to building as it’s a type of sedimentary rock that evidently splits well, creating nice flat layers… which have even been used for the roof! It’s interesting to observe that with modern buildings, a roof may only last a couple of decades – yet here we have a 100+ year old roof that may need some damp proofing but is structurally intact. The large roof stones are extremely heavy (a few of them are a four man lift!) and supported by a very solid beam structure. Being so robust means the roof can evidently withstand the weight of mountain snowfall – an essential for cold climates.
After some rudimentary work clearing debris, vegetation and fitting a door that happened to be laying around, it’s time to set up a simple off-grid solar power setup. At one point we see him sweeping 6 inches of snow off the solar panels – you aren’t going to get much electricity out of them under a layer of snow.
Now this is the life. This is one of my absolute favorite videos that I have curated and reviewed for off-grid.info Martijn has a load more videos on his channel where he discusses various aspects of his adventure. I learned that he paid 21,000 Euro for the property, which I am guessing was perhaps in 2020. He found it on the website idealista.it and there is also a Spanish version of the site idealista.es.
There’s 3 hours of carefully edited footage to enjoy here. The video is incredibly satisfying as well as informative – but you can watch it in the background while you are doing something else. This was a ton of work to put together (especially when you consider that the work on the cabin is already a big project) and its gratifying to see his channel is picking up a big following.
