In this interesting video by Freakinreviews we get an answer to the question that many of us have no doubt wondered: Do those expensive battery brands actually last longer? And is the additional battery life worth the additional cost?
The brands tested were
Panasonic Super Heavy Duty Power
Sunbeam
CVS Alkaline
Energizer Ultimate Lithium
Duracell Quantum
Duracell
This was a simple test using small fans and timing how long they would run, but varying the fans so as to create an even test.
The more expensive batteries did last longer than the cheaper ones – but the cost per hour revealed that the CVS and the quantum were very expensive, with the Sunbeam and the Panasonic (the two dollar-store brands!) coming in as the best value and the “regular Duracell” coming in third.
We learned that Energizer was the best performer in terms of duration, but Sunbeam worked out as having the best bang for the buck.
The most expensive – the Duracell Quantum – was not the longest lasting!

All of the data is well presented in the video and gives us clear insight into which of these brands performed best. But there are so many battery brands out there – and of course different batches might perform differently over time as manufacturing methods change. Also, the various brands can be obtained for varying prices if you shop around.
So in conclusion, the Energizer is a great battery when you don’t want to have to change it often and need reliability – for example a clock. However the Sunbeam is a great choice when you don’t mind swapping out the battery more often and want the lowest cost – however bear in minf that there is a greater ecological burden from using more batteries altogether.
