In the age of consumer products that we are now in, with all its virtues and vices (though which of these is greater?) we are so used to reaching for a plastic bottle of cleaning chemicals, that we now imagine that the world before these chemicals must have been a filthy place. Well, such is the power of marketing. How did anyone survive before this zingy new toxic stuff came along?

We’ve forgotten the amazing power of natural ingredients. Lemon is an old champion coming out of retirement, a well known-cleaner that has been in use since time immemorial – and there are a lot of uses of this citrus fruit that will really blow your mind. You might even end up throwing all of your artificial cleaners and boasting “We only use off grid cleaning methods in our house.”

Lemon juice is very acidic – but it’s a biodegradable, environmentally friendly cleaning agent. It’s also a known antioxidant. It has a clean, fresh scent that (ironically) makes it one of the most popular scents added to artificial cleaning agents – but people are rediscovering the fact that you can use the lemon by itself. 😉

Our friends at The Country Chic Cottage have been sophisticated enough to share with us 25 ways to naturally clean your home with the use of lemons.

One of my most favorite ways of using lemon is by turning it into a disinfectant and a deodorizer. I use it to make my fingers smell better after chopping garlic and onions. Try rubbing some lemon on your chopping boards before washing them with dishwashing liquid. It’s important that your chopping boards are clean especially if you’re handling raw fruits and vegetables.

Did you know that lemon juice can also be used as a natural bleaching agent that can make your white clothes brighter? Some people even use it to bleach their hair! All you have to do is to mix 1/4 cup of warm water and 1 cup of freshly squeezed lemon juice. Add in one cup of fresh orange juice and then fill a spray bottle with it. For those who have dry hair, you can mix the citrus concoction with 1/4 cup of hair conditioner. Apply the lemon lightener to your hair and give it a few brushes (since you’ll be exposing yourself to the sun, make sure that you’ve already applied a high-SPF sunscreen on your skin). Once the hair is soaked, you can then expose your hair outside in the sun for at least an hour to 1 1/2 hours. After this, continue applying the lemon juice mixture and expose it again for another 30 minutes. Once you’re finished, wash it off and deep condition your hair to keep it hydrated. Keep on doing this process to see significant results.

Another thing that can be cleaned is the oven. I think that I read somewhere that if you put some sliced lemons in the oven, it will make the cleaning easier. Citrus/orange is good to sanitize the dishwasher, so I am sure that lemon is good as well.
