Homemade Green Non-Toxic Deodorizing Spray – Image To Repin / Share

Maintaining a healthy home environment is a key part of caring for ourselves. This natural deodorizing spray is another step towards freedom from using chemicals in the home that can pollute the air we breathe. It’s often said that safe, green products are not so effective but we’ve discovered this one, and many more besides, that can be made easily at home and do their job really well!
A lot of the “air freshening” products in the stores are based on petrochemical derivatives and often contain toxic chemicals that can harm the immune system, the hormone balance of the body as well as causing neurological damage or even cancer – they build up in carpets and home furnishings to be released constantly into the air as they do not break down readily.
Using chemical products in the confined space of your home on a daily basis increases the risk of ill health, especially over a long period of time -all for the sake of a pleasant scent! Aerosol propellants and volatile organic compounds in regular deodorizing sprays are also a common cause of pollution.
“But surely companies can’t sell us toxic chemicals to spray around our homes?” I hear you askÉ recent testing shows that they can and do. Pressure is growing on them to remove toxic ingredients but this often happens long after they are found to be unsafe – too late for those that have been using them for years. Don’t be fooled by the soothing words of the adverts and labels!
If you look in the stores for clean, safe alternatives to chemical deodorizers, the chances are that you’ll see some scary price tags! Cost is one of the biggest factors that puts people off using them and the companies that produce them struggle to compete with the big corporations that supply so many household products.
The essential oils in the featured recipe will last a long time, which means that a home made product often works out much cheaper in the long run – a spray bottle can be refilled and used many times so you won’t be paying for a new one every time.
Baking soda is another economic, safe product that will absorb odours in the home. It can be sprayed as a solution, sprinkled on carpets before vacuuming or simply left in a bowl exposed to the air. There are free options too! – Good ventilation is helpful and the ultraviolet light from the sun can be used to kill bacteria in your clothing, bedding and linen to keep them smelling fresh!
