Nature Hacks created a post on the things that you need to learn when you’re planning to start your own herb garden. The link is after our additional tips.
If you’re planning to start your own herb garden, you might feel a little overwhelmed with the variety of plants available. One of the best tips that I can give you is to start with the ones that you use the most – and then plant more herbs once you get the hang of it.
One thing that you have to know about these herbs is that they all have their own specific needs and wants. Mint is known to take up a lot of space (in fact it is famous for going crazy and taking over) – so it might be one for a large earthenware pot that will limit its ability to expand. Other plants don’t even like to be transplanted.
Here are some gardening tips for a few famous herbs:
Basil – try to plant your basil outdoors when the ground is warm. It loves to grow in full sun and in well drained compost-rich soil. Add mulch to retain water because this herb loves its H20.
Tarragon – Prune the plant regularly to prevent flowering. Keep the height to about two feet or else the plant will fall over. For those who live in colder areas, put mulch around the plants in late fall so that the roots are protected during the winter.
Rosemary – Give these plants enough room to grow. Rosemary can grow up to 4 feet and it can also spread up to 4 feet as well. Prune them regularly because they tend to get lanky. You won’t have a shortage of Rosemary when this one gets in gear!
Cilantro – Sow cilantro seeds in the spring as soon as the danger of frost is over.
Dill – This herb doesn’t transplant well so it has to be grown in an area where it’s dry and sunny. Dill is a great herb to cook fish with.
