Burying a log in your veggie garden can be an interesting spectacle that would have many neighbors wondering what you could possibly be up to. But there’s a fantastic reason for it. Logs buried deep in the veggie beds gradually break down, releasing their nutrients into the soil for a sustained boost to the soil fertility.

This video demonstrates the full details of what happens when you bury logs in raised beds in the veggie garden. After a few months, the logs look solid in the outer layer but the inner part is soft and spongy. It is the way wood decomposes and provides nutrients and aeration to the soil around it. The logs break down and turn into “sponges” that are not only nutrient-rich but full of moisture. The decomposition also facilitates the soil to aerate easily and for plant roots to penetrate easily.
