There are also other reasons beside cost why you might want not to use standard new materials; such as the environmental impact.
A wide array of alternative housing options have emerged of late, quite possibly spurred on by how today’s economy has negatively affected the construction industry and made homes that rely on traditional but rather expensive components more of a challenge to acquire. However alternative housing revolves not only around saving money, but also around the preference to “downsize” and to use building materials other than those that degrade the environment or deplete our natural resources. It’s amazing what you can make from recycled, reclaimed or even scavenged (legally of course!) building materials here. And of course, compared to “ordinary” housing, there’s the possibility to save tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars.
