The empty shipping container is a very nondescript box, but in the hands of a creative builder or architect, it can become a comfortable and inspiring place to live! This short video takes us on a tour of some of these amazing conversions. If anyone had asked me whether I wanted to live in an old shipping container, I would have thought they were crazy until I saw this!
A shipping container can provide a ready made structure for converting into a home. It is easy to move around to wherever you want to live as it was designed specifically for worldwide travel! There are a lot of used containers on the market these days – some that no longer meet the required quality controls for transportation for certain goods and sometimes containers are sold simply because the owners do not want to relocate them! This means that they could be made available for upcycling and can add another great option to the growing list of possible new housing ideas.
Containers provide a solid structure and could be ideal for use in hurricane or earthquake prone areas. They can be used as modules and stacked in various ways to create a unique home design – though it should be noted that (contrary to popular belief) they should not be buried without structural reinforcement, as they are not designed to take weight on the roof panels – and the weight of soil on top of them would cave them in.
There are growing numbers of used containers available for purchase and the low cost and convenience of using them for housing means that they could provide another solution to help reduce the overall consumption of building materials that contributes to environmental damage. As a guide, a 20′ container costs on average around $3000, a 40′ one around $5000.
The addition of wooden floors makes these container homes look cosy and stylish. Windows and doors can be cut out easily and insulation can be added to the walls as well – a layer of cladding on the outside will add further insulation, improve the appearance and help to preserve the steel – this is a less polluting alternative to using marine paint or another high solvent paint.
There are many other uses for these containers apart from housing – they make good secure storage sheds and workshops or could even make a Prepper bunker. And there is now a shopping mall in London, called “Boxpark”, that is made from 61 shipping containers!
If you’re serious about making your own container home, you’ll need to do some research. For example, it is usually necessary to obtain approval for a steel building from your local authorities. If you’re using a container for storage it’s unlikely that you’ll need approval as it won’t be a permanent or residential structure. Fortunately, there are many conversion projects already completed so all the information and inspiration you need can be found quite easily!
