Tiny House MISTAKES & 10 Design Tips For DIYers

Here’s a video from Tiny House Giant Journey which interviews Pam and Bruce Westra, who have built 9 Tiny Houses. They share their tips and tricks for a successful build. All the tiny houses they built used unique designs.

Video the ‘skeleton’ before putting sheet materials on the walls, so you have a document of where all the cables and water lines are running.

Put the shower stall in before putting the walls up, because it’s bigger than any of the doorways!

The house has to have a structural link to the trailer and this should be done at the correct stage. Threaded rod can be used to tie the entire building to the trailer.

Use Ram Board on your floors. I’ve used this on a home remodel and it gives much better protection than basic paper roll against damage from dropped tools etc.

Ladders or stairs? Both have their pros and cons. Stairs take up more space but are safer and the space under the stairs can be used for storage.

Bumpouts can be put on the front or back but not on the sides due to vehicle width restrictions.

Space saving tables or desktops. For example, a drop leaf table can ‘disappear’ when not in use. Other tables can fold flat against the wall and be lowered into position when needed.

How is your roof going to help you use the space? For the biggest loft size, use a “barn roof”; however a sloping shed roof style roof is much simpler and more suited to less experienced builders.

Roofing materials – corrugated roof is the cheapest and easiest to work with, asphalt is mid grade, metal standing rib is the most durable but more expensive.

Entry door placement – sidewall doors should be placed on the passenger side so that when parked, you exit on the safest side rather than right into the road. Door on the end looks appealing and facilitates a porch that overhangs the trailer tongue.

 Have fun!
