This interesting video from FLORB gives us a rundown of the “ultimate adventure vehicle” – and the lifestyle that it facilitates.

Our intrepid couple started out their “vanlife journey” with a Mercedes Sprinter, but after serveral months on the road and realizing that they loved the lifestyle, they decided that they wanted something a bit more serious (as well as with more space, no doubt).

So they opted for an M-1083, which is a 6×6 military truck, as their base. These are serious off road vehicles that can handle all kinds of terrain in all kinds of conditions. The truck has 48″ tires – this truck is bigger than you think! It also has CTIS (central tire inflation system) which allows the tire pressure to be adjusted anywhere between 20 and 75 psi. This is a critical feature for difficult / sticky terrain as softening the tires increases the “footprint”, which allows much better grip on the land surface. The spare wheel weighs 400 pounds!

Their cabin was built by Global Expedition Vehicles, who are professional overland vehicle fabricators.

The price of these trucks is an interesting factor. Ex-military vehicles can often be obtained at incredibly low cost from military auctions – very often with extremely low mileage. Depending on where you are, licensing might be difficult: In the UK, you may need an HGV license to drive one on the road – and registration may also require proof of intended use. There is also border restriction; the export of such vehicles may be restricted in order to “prevent them ending up in the wrong hands”. In other words, there are some real potential hurdles – however I am guessing that in the USA this vehicle, registered as a motorhome, would be driveable on an ordinary license. It’s vital to do your research before embarking on this journey.

On the other side – a custom overlander build from an experienced and skilled fabricator could lead to an overall six-figure expense! However to counter this, you are looking at a lifestyle that has minimal overheads. No mortgage, no house utilities and no “golden handcuffs”… I enjoyed Martin’s philosophy of choosing to live an adventure now rather than waiting until retirement for your freedom. Van life gives the opportunity to do so – but of course unless you are already rich, you need a way to generate income on the road.
