Fire is an important element if you are in a survival situation but starting it from scratch could be easier said than done. Knowing how to start a fire without matches is an essential survival skill many of us don’t possess so having this Solar Fire Starter in your gear might work in your favor.
The concept of this product is the same as starting fires using a magnifying glass – only it uses a parabolic reflector instead of a glass lens. When the sun’s rays hit the reflector all across its face, each of those rays will be redirected to the focal point. In time, this spot will get very hot and will produce combustion of the tinder placed there.
As long as it is sunny and there is enough tinder, you will be able to build fire without exerting too much effort. The parabolic disk has a diameter of approximately 10 centimeters and at the center is a metal spring to put your tinder in. This clever product is completely waterproof and its reverse side can be used as a signal mirror in case you need to be rescued! It is inexpensive too at around $10.
This solar fire starter can be stored indefinitely since it is made out of stainless steel and needs very little maintenance. You will never have to refuel it unlike lighters and you won’t have to worry about rain or high winds which will render your matches useless if exposed to the said elements.
