Are you looking for inspiration to build your ideal home? This video by yootubealator features a gem of a project but more than that, it holds the key to making natural building methods the obvious choice! In my mind, when it comes to finding ways to build a house with a small environmental impact, Ben’s house can teach us so much. As well as being strongly committed to natural principles, it looks fantastic and I’m sure that it is a joy to live in.

Timber, straw, clay and lime (all of which are used in the featured house build) are the core sustainable building materials. They have been used for millennia to build houses and are both durable and efficient to use. You might think that modern materials would be cheaper and have the best properties – but this is often not the case, especially for straw that has very good insulating properties built in. Clay is very widely available – it is formed by streams and rivers the world over – but care must be taken to minimise damage to the local environment when it is extracted.

Ben, the builder of this spectacular house, is fortunate to have the skills and access to many of the materials needed for the project on his very own land – it would be necessary to source these elsewhere for most of us.

We’ve gathered a list of further resources for those wishing to learn more, these are listed below.

Hemp is another material that is beginning to be known for its excellent properties and high level of sustainability. It is used with lime to create a natural plaster – ideal for use on straw bales as well as for old stone or brick properties that need a breathable wall surface to keep out damp. A porous top coat must also be used for clay or lime plasters, such as limewash or distemper. For more about hemp, here’s a good article: http://www.hemp.org/news/book/export/html/202
