Here’s a brilliant video tutorial on solar power installation that we had to share. The video is below our introduction to the topic.

Our modern technology has ushered an era where living in homes conveniently powered by solar power is not anymore a far-fetched or for-millionaires-only dream. With the advent of cheaper and more readily available solar technology, homeowners across the globe have started to realize what the sun’s energy can do for them and their household living. Systems nowadays run with minimal intervention, except for battery maintenance for those battery storage systems of certain packages. Does a renewable energy system sound good to your ears? Well, you need to figure out first if you want to live “off grid” or “grid-tied”…

Off-grid systems have no connection to the power company, are independent of the utility grid, and incorporate batteries to the system to furnish energy storage in times of low input (when the sun is not shining!) or high usage. On-grid or grid-tied systems are the “opposite” and come with connection to the utility power grid. That means you may still buy power from the power company when needed, but here’s the other bonus: You can send out any excess electricity produced to the grid – and potentially make money!

So, which is better? Well, it depends on several factors. Remember that off-grid systems require batteries. With off-grid systems, expect some system maintenance and troubleshooting responsibilities to perform as well. Hence, grid-tied solar power systems score a point with respect to cost. But the best selling point of off-grid systems is total independence and, to a lesser extent, expandability. Homes on off-grid systems enjoy being free from rate increases or blackouts – plus the local utility’s terms and policies do not apply to off-grid systems.

Ok here’s the video:

It’s better to put the solar panels on a swivel mount in an open area in your yard. This way you can adjust to the summer/winter solstice. Also, if you put them on your roof, and let’s say you will need a new roof 10 years from now; you will need to hire a technician to remove/reinstall the panels before/after your new roof.
