Crunchy, cool, and flavorful pickles are a treat! They go perfectly alone as a snack, with various savory dishes or as an ingredient in sandwiches. But did you know that making a jar of pickles is so easy that the process could fit in a 3-minute YouTube video?
Andy George from the How to Make Everything YouTube channel visited Grandma’s Gourmet Pickles — whereby Kim skimmed over the surprisingly simple recipe of making perfect pickles. Some of the main takeaways from their interaction include:
• It’s all about finding the perfect cucumber. There are different varieties of cucumber you can choose, with each having different characteristics. But regardless of which variety you use, ensure it’s firm, ripe, and fresh from the garden. Always cut out any blemishes or bruises on the skin. When preparing the cucumbers for pickling, you can cut them into spears, slices, or use the whole vegetable.
• Feel free to experiment with different added flavors. Some common examples include dill, garlic, pepper, and mustard seed.
• Brine is the elixir that turns ordinary cucumbers into long-lasting pickles. It’s typically a mixture of equal parts of saltwater and vinegar. It’s poured into a jar containing pickles and flavorings. And according to Kim from Grandma’s Gourmet Pickles, consider processing them by dipping the jar in a hot water bath for a few minutes. This increases their shelf life, but it may make the pickles a bit softer.
After allowing the pickles to sit for 6-8 weeks, Andy opened his jar to sample them and his reply was “now, that is a good pickle!”
