How To Grow Ginger In Containers And Get A Huge Harvest – Image: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-mUeNy0rweM
People have dug up the versatile ginger root for centuries — owing to its culinary versatility and health benefits. But rather than pick up a ginger spice bottle in your local store, why not grow the plant yourself? It’ll be better for your palate (i.e., you get fresh produce), budget (i.e., it’s cheaper and even a source of income), and health (i.e., no growth inhibitors or pesticides).
And no; you don’t need any advanced agricultural skills or specialized farm tools to grow your own ginger plant — it’s surprisingly easy to learn how to grow ginger in containers. In a YouTube video by Kevin from Epic Gardening, he clearly elaborates how to easy it is to pick out best ginger knobs (chunks of rhizomes), how to plant them, and how to care for the shoots.
Here are some of the main tips on how to grow ginger in containers, as covered in the video:
• Growing Conditions: For a huge harvest, keep in mind that ginger thrives in warm, humid, and wet conditions. Although ginger is an all-year-round plant, it’s advisable to plant them during spring. This gives mother nature the chance to work her magic. But if you want to start your ginger garden immediately, you’ll have to give the plants some extra attention to make up for any discrepancies in the growing conditions.
• Container: After the ginger stalks begin to come up, you’ll notice the rhizomes (roots) under the soil grow horizontally. With this in mind, consider using a wide, shallow container—rather a narrow, tall one.
• Soil: As with any plant, ensure the soil is rich in nutrients and organic matter. Also, keep the soil loose to give the rhizomes an allowance to creep and expand.
Fun Fact: Although we typically refer to ginger as a root, it’s actually a rhizome — which is an underground stem.
