A fish basket may be a primitive way of fishing, but it is nonetheless a great survival tool! As opposed to spearing and other active fishing survival techniques, weaving a fish basket trap requires little energy and its results are impressive. Tom McElroy from Wild Survival Skills leverages some of the skills he has honed over the decades to create this informative video.
In a survival setup where you don’t have access to tools, hooks, or a knife, learning how to build a survival fish trap such as this fish basket trap is an indispensable (and potentially lifesaving) skill. It’s like having a 24/7 fishing buddy constantly working to feed you. The only maintenance you need is to occasionally reinforce the structure and re-bait the trap.
If you’re a lone survivor, this gives you the much-needed time to undertake other essential tasks such as gathering firewood, purifying water, and building shelter. And the best part? Live food doesn’t go bad.
The only drawback of a fish basket trap is the time spent weaving the structure. But then again; this is a one-off investment that’ll keep giving for a prolonged period with minimal hassle.
How to Weave a Survival Fish Trap
The first step in building a fish trap is determining the size of the contraption. This decision comes down to the average size of the animals you plan to hunt. Next is to find appropriate material – i.e., look for vines/sticks that are flexible enough for weaving but sturdy. Some great options include Willow shoots and bamboo.
When you’ve nailed down the size of the basket and collected enough material, it’s time to weave. Tom illustrates the process in the easy-to-learn tutorial—from creating the base to building the structure. The trap is baited and placed in a small stream where fish come from the surrounding area to feast on the bit.
