Here’s another great tutorial from Jeff Yago on the “backwoodshome” web site – this time he gives us the lowdown on setting up a solar powered outside light that can be sited just about anywhere! The link follows after our introduction to the topic.
This light could be perfect for outbuildings, sign lighting, parking areas and statues or monuments. The tutorial has clear diagrams and gives explanations of the component parts you’ll need with tips on how to align the solar array correctly.
Siting a solar system is the number one factor – the panel needs to be clear from anything that could block or reduce the amount of sunlight it receives. Battery choice is important as well, especially for a lighting system that depends completely on stored energy for night-time use.
Deep cycle or “deep discharge” batteries are specifically designed for this purpose but there are differences in quality – some are designed to be discharged more fully than others! Generally, they will last much longer if not discharged more than 50% but make sure to do your calculations to save having to replace the battery too often.
Most of the solar panels on the market are the “crystalline wafer” type – these are quite bulky but more efficient than the newer “thin film” solar modules, which are more durable and flexible. Solar is a growing industry in recent years so the technology for panels and batteries is likely to improve in the future. A lot of recent development of thin film panels is taking place in China so they could overtake the conventional type within the next few years.
There is an important point made about the need to make off-grid electrical systems as efficient as possible – this will reduce the size of both the photovoltaic panels and batteries that you’ll need!
Low energy lights such as sodium, fluorescent tubes or LED’s are the most efficient and larger gauge copper wires, as short as possible, will lose less power. The reason for this is simple – low voltage systems carry a larger current and the power lost is equal to the resistance of the wires multiplied by the square of the current.
Larger wires have much less electrical resistance so they don’t turn precious electricity into heat (don’t forget that wire gauge numbers reduce as the diameter increases). Commercial solar powered lighting kits are now widely available if you don’t feel able to tackle this DIY project yourself so it’s easier than ever to go off-grid!
