Here’s an awesome video from well known off-grid solar DIYer DavidPoz, where he documents the building of a third solar array in his garden. His overall goal is to provide all of his home power needs from solar electricity.

Everything was done “on the cheap” using second-hand solar panels and salvaged materials. I like how he makes things “on the fly” to some extent, pulling parts from his scrap parts bin as required.

One thing that is critical with solar power design is securing the panels well. Solar panels are heavy and in a high wind, the array can act like a sail and be subjected to significant forces. If the array is not extremely well secured, it could take off and potentially cause catastrophic damage or even serious injury.

Hence the use of the ‘over-engineered” frame, which is built like a tank (it weighs over 1000 pounds!) However it isn’t anchored to the ground, so it is held down with heavy items so that it won’t take off in a high wind. It’s probably fine, but I would have opted for putting in some concrete footings with some Simpson anchor bolts as used in house foundations.

This array uses 14 x 365W panels (he got them used for $100 ea which is incredible) in order to give a total of 5,110W. It’s quite surprising just how many panels are required to power an entire house. It’s quite common for a home’s power requirements to be 20kW per day, depending on the size of the home, the number of people living there and their commitment to saving energy! This array might power such a home – however on cloudy days you would of course not be adding much juice into the system. Your array needs to be not only enough to provide an “average day’s use” but needs to supply more than this in order to cover for cloudy days.

Also of course in winter the amount of sunlight your array receives will be less, while your requirements may be more due to heating needs!
In general, a solar photovoltaic setup needs to be able to supply an abundance of power, but of course should not be so large that money is being wasted. It’s a balancing act and a good way to do it is to gradually add more panels and arrays until the system matches the home’s actual use.
