Here we have an amazingly inspiring time-lapse video by Mr Wild Nature that shows him building a beautiful forest house using predominantly materials found in nature: hand cut timbers, stones and mud cement!

This is a real “low tech” build with minimal store-bought materials, but Mr. Wildnature is clearly a real craftsman. It shows just what can be done using ingenuity, patience and determined effort.

Everything is held together with mud/hay mix, a traditional building technique (v similar in principle to the wattle and daub method that goes back to ancient Mesopotamia); including the woodburning stove crudely fashioned from an oil drum. That’s going to kick out some serious heat and the mud / stones around it will create thermal mass that will retain warmth in a similar manner to fire brick.

You can tell it’s cold there because he fires up the burner before he’s even built the surround. It’s actually a brilliant design, with the oil drum effectively acting as a liner. The mud around it will fire from the heat and he will end up with a stone/brick oven that will last far longer than the oil drum!

The cabin has a corrugated iron roof, I am not sure but that might have been salvaged from scrap.

Top video. This is a very satisfying build packed with brilliant ideas and design principles. He seems to have set himself up for a life of contentment and his dogs (five of them!) must be in their element playing in the snow in the forest and chillin’ in the sunshine. There are numerous artistic features – I really enjoyed the decorative circular slices of wood, revealing the tree rings; and the octagonal window. The final effect is actually very stylish.

It’s amazing to think that the overall cost of this build, at a guess, must have been perhaps under a thousand dollars. I learned from the comments that he picked up a simple 500W off grid power station from Rockpals. You can see their gear on Amazon here, it’s very affordable. For a low-power set up that can run a few lights, charge a phone + tool batteries, and power a laptop, these kinds of power blocks are the way to go as they are highly convenient, portable and highly versatile.

He’s also using a battery chainsaw. Here’s a great example of one of those from DeWalt on Amazon.
