In this inspiring video from HomeMadeModern we see the construction of a solar powered workshop based around a basic shed.

A TuffShed was purchased from good ole’ Home Depot and these sheds are delivered and constructed by Home Depot’s crew. You provide the flat plot and they do the rest. Personally I would opt for putting in concrete piers – using simple cardboard form tubes.

Four photovoltaic panels were installed onto the most southerly-facing side of the roof (Northern hemisphere) – and I would consider the alignment of the roof before installing the shed!

Fairly standard stuff. The rest of the solar system is typical too – deep cycle batteries, charge controler, fuses and inverter to give AC power. However we observe that a professional installer was hired in order to perform the installation and this is a good idea.

A grounding rod is used to ground the entire system and this connects to the fuse box.

My biggest critique of this setup is that while it’s clearly a professional quality build (and a pretty workshop), it’s not really eco-friendly or cost effective. A ton of new materials – and it’s highly unlikely that this small workshop will ever use enough electricity for the setup to pay for itself.

Such a design would be suitable for an “off grid” location where mains power is not available – however if you are simply setting up a “garden shed type workshop”… I think you would be better off running an extension cord or having electrical power run professionally from the house to the workshop.

It’s a popular video and it’s interesting to get ideas – however we don’t really learn much about the technical aspects of the solar power installation. He doesn’t really understand solar power and hired a pro.
