Here’s a video from AlfieAesthetics with a giant list of prepping tips. These are brilliant. I am not going to list them all – but looking through the comments I noticed there were tons of extra tips and some of these jumped out. I’ve added 10 bonus tips for you:
1: Instead of cutting wood for shavings it is easier to simply carry a pencil sharpener. This can be used on twigs to create tinder – and the quantity is more consistent / lighter.
2: If you are making a fire ring using rocks, do not use rocks that have been sitting in water, such as those from a riverbed. Water trapped inside the rock will build up tremendous pressure when heated by the fire and can explode dangerously!
3: Pack a candle, it can be used to light fires from a single match in addition to the numerous other uses it has.
4: Birch trees can be tapped like maples for sweet pure water.
5: If you are going to use bleach to purify water, be very sure to get pure unscented! Overall it is better to pack some water purification tablets rather than messing around with a bottle of bleach.
6: Some survival flashlights have a pre-programmed SOS signal. Useful item to pack.
7: Get fit to fight. Lots of survivalists have tons of supplies but are out of shape. If you can run, can fight and have self defence training you have a distinct advantage over those who cannot.
8: When packing your backpack, pack the heaviest items closest to your body if possible.
9: Amazing winter survival tip: Carry two screwdrivers, they act as climbing tools if you fall through ice.
10: A big garbage bag has a ton of survival uses. Pack one. Go for the unscented ones.
