A tripwire is a very simple method of creating a security system. This video by Household Hacker shows how to make a modern homemade trip wire using inexpensive materials. Whether you are in a survival situation or just want some additional security, this is a useful skill to learn.

Trip alarms have been around for centuries now and in old times only the wire / string was attached to a bell or string of bells. These alarms have now evolved along with technology – but you can still make a low-tech version: If there is a power outage or “grid down” scenario, then you may not be able to count on high-tech alarm systems that require grid power or an internet connection. That is why as a prepper, you build additional layers of redundancy into your systems so that you do not have a “single point of failure”.

A trip wire will not be your only defense, but it will be an additional alert you to the presence of intruders. DIY trip wire alarms vary in design. Some provide a visual alert and some give an audible alarm. It depends on you on what type of alarm you choose for your system.

To maintain the element of surprise, make sure that the wires of the trap are well concealed. Basic knowledge on electrical equipment is needed when working on this project and when dealing with wires, always practice caution. Note that using duct tape or basic tape (as shown in the video) for wiring is not the safest idea. Instead, use a wire nut or a crimp connector to join the wires.

And even more simple version consists of a simple wire attached to something that will make a loud noise if the wire is pulled – for example ringing a bell of some kind or causing something to fall with a crash.

  1. did I miss something the white thread is not going to separate the two pieces of foil, did you place something tied onto the string that will keep the two pieces of foil from touching?
