Here’s an inspiring and highly educational video report from Happen Films about a New Zealand couple who took two acres of neglected land and transformed it into a wonderful food forest.

A food forest is a biodiverse “miniature ecosystem” in which all the elements work together. The natural potential of the land to produce an abundance of edible crops is maximized without the negative impacts on the land that may be caused by “normal” agriculture / agribusiness.

The whole thing is based on permaculture ideals – minimally invasive and with a focus on maximising the biodiversity. A forest gardener works with nature as opposed to attempting to “conquer” the land. It turns out that this “minimal intervention” approach ideal is a win-win. The greater the vibrant health of the land, the greater its potential to sustain our own health naturally. It makes perfect sense – and is also low maintenance.

The property was in a distressed condition when it was purchased – the home had burned down in a fire and there was junk everywhere. “Nobody wanted it” and so it was low cost – however through the years of TLC it’s been restored to a pristine condition.

“My philosophy in life about what to do in the world isn’t to go to a pristine area and live there and enjoy your life; it’s to find a place that’s degraded and fix it up” – Robert Guyton.
