Here’s an inspiring van life video from Tío Aventura featuring a couple who decided to downsize in a big way, purchasing a Mercedes Sprinter and doing a DIY conversion to make a beautiful tiny home.
The title calls them “amateurs” but don’t be fooled, the work is done right and the results are anything but amateurish!
The Sprinter is one of the most popular choices for van conversion, having a great combination of size and reliability. As this is a well-trodden path, there are tons of tutorials and plans available – so if you were to choose to do this you could follow a tested plan.
Insulation and electrical wiring are among the first steps to take and we can see that a good plan is essential because once the wall panels are in, you aren’t going to be wanting to change the position of your wiring! First “Kingspan” or similar panel insulation is fitted into the wall cavities. Then spray foam and finally the “silver bubble wrap” type insulation is put on the inside.
Roof rails are added to facilitate the bolting on of solar panels.
It’s interesting to see door and wall steel panels being cut away with simple tools and windows being fitted.
Flooring is simple manufactured snap-together flooring of the same type we see in homes.
Wall panels: Plywood is screwed on (evidently choosing a thickness that has enough flex to conform to the curved side walls) and then simple plywood cabinets are fitted, which neatly cover the wheel wells. There’s a lot of plywood going in and I would counsel to use formaldehyde-free low-VOC plywood if possible as you are going to be breathing that stuff otherwise.
My biggest critique of this type of van build is that by the time everything has been put in, you are left with a pretty cramped space. Pocket doors and low profile appliances are used to maximize the space but even so, there isn’t much room to move once it’s all done. However this drawback of vanlife is compensated for by the fact that the world is yours to explore.
It’s always interesting to see the show / wet room being installed. We didn’t see the water tanks being put in and I am not sure of the detail on those. I am going to guess there is a freshwater tank, an on demand water heater, a greywater tank and a cassette toilet which eliminates the need for a blackwater tank.
And the end result is fantastic. It seems like a lot of work – but compared to the amount of work you need to do in order to pay for your typical house… it ends up being orders of magnitude less!

An amazing discovery in an abandoned house in Austin, Texas: A lost book of amazing survival knowledge, believed to have been long vanished to history, has been found in a dusty drawer in the house which belonged to a guy named Claude Davis.
Remember... back in those days, there was no electricity... no refrigerators... no law enforcement... and certainly no grocery store or supermarkets... Some of these exceptional skills are hundreds of years of old and they were learned the hard way by the early pioneers.
We've lost to history so much survival knowledge that we've become clueless compared to what our great grandfathers did or built on a daily basis to sustain their families.
Neighbors said that for the last couple of years Claude has tried to unearth and learn the forgotten ways of our great-grandparents and claimed to have found a secret of gargantuan proportions. A secret that he is about to reveal together with 3 old teachings that will change everything you think you know about preparedness:
