Here’s an awesome video from Sensible Prepper that demonstrates a great list ways that ammo cans can be used for survival.

What’s not to love about ammo cans? Called by some the best-designed metal box in the world, called by others “tupperware for real men”; they are incredibly sturdy, pest proof, very water resistant (as long as the seals are intact) and give superb protection to whatever is inside them.

They also serve fairly well as faraday boxes to protect sensitive items from EMFs and perhaps prevent a device from location tracking, which could be beneficial – especially with metal tape covering the seams.

I’ve been using ammo cans for years – I’ve made ammo can stoves and used them to store electronic items, toolkits and an emergency car kit. They also make great “man tin” gifts and it’s a very safe bet that if you have a male friend who is outdoorsy or into prepping they will be well received.

SensiblePrepper runs down the various ammo can sizes – 30cal, 50cal, 556.

Here’s the rundown of the 25 survival uses (I only counted 20 in the video but added more from the ton of extras in the comments under the video):

1. Ammo storage!
2. Survival Kit
3. Step stool (don’t stack them
4. Keep your tinder, matches and fire kit dry
5. Small stool to sit on
6. Emergency car kit
7. Handgun storage (using foam insert)
8. Carrying water (non-potable)
9. Clothes washing bucket
10. Field toilet (with plastic bag)
11. Medical supplies / first aid
12. Bolt to vehicle for storage
13. Home made radio
14. Fill with dirt / rocks for a bulletproof shield
15. Important document storage and protection
16. Survival seed storage – keeps them dark, cool and watertight
17. Storage of flammable items such as cans of WD-40
18. Fill with ice to use as cooler
19. Fill with hot coals / rocks from fire pit for a tent warmer (use safely)
20. Radio / survival electronics storage and protection
21. As a weight for working out, with sand or dirt added
22. Use as a mold for making cement blocks
23. Cut knives out of it or other sheet steel items
24. Dry storage for a spare set of underclothes
25. Fixed under the hood of a vehicle for a secret storage compartment (amazing idea, who is going to look in there?!!!) You can also add a padlock by fixing a u-bolt hasp through the flip handle.

NOTE – ammo cans should be rinsed out thoroughly before use. They have been used to contain lead and propellants. It’s not advised to use them for food or potable water.
