In this inspiring and calming video from TA Outdoors, we see a medieval-style bushcraft house built using hand held tools, drawing inspiration from an anglo saxon “pit house”. The traditional “pit house” was partly submerged and this technique kept temperatures more constant throughout the year. It also meant less building materials were needed.
Another wonderful thing about this video is that we learn that it is a father and son working together. Something we arguably don’t see enough of these days; and we forget that up until the last century, that was always how things were. Have you ever noticed also that there’s something glorious about people working together in silence? No unnecessary chat or filling the space with noise. Just being fully present and working towards shared goals. It’s truly inspiring.
The meditative silence is so evocative that I almost don’t want to add anything. You can learn all the techniques by observation, just as it would have been done in old times. In very old days, before schools, youngsters most often followed in their parents’ footsteps when it came to their trade. Children would watch their parents doing tasks before they were invited to do them (or asked to do them themselves) for the first time. They would then gradually learn and all the skills developed over a lifetime would be passed on from generation to generation.
By far the most complex part of this build, by the looks of things, is the straw thatch roof. It’s evident that they have done this before and the pinning process requires close teamwork. The end result looks amazing but my biggest critique is that this type of roof is not at all fireproof. The walls, being covered with cob (mud and hay mix), are quite fire resistant but that roof would go up like a torch.
Damp mossy material from the forest floor is forced into the cracks between the gable end timbers in order to draft proof them, then more cob is added to the wooden walls.
After the finishing touches are done, it’s time to make a feast and celebrate.

What Tinnitus Does To Your Brain Cells (And How To Stop It)
After 47 years of studies and countless brain scans done on more than 2,400 tinnitus patients, scientists at the MIT Institute found that in a shocking 96% of cases, tinnitus was actually shrinking their brain cells.
As it turns out, tinnitus and brain health are strongly linked.
Even more interesting: The reason why top army officials are not deaf after decades of hearing machine guns, bombs going off and helicopter noises...
Is because they are using something called "the wire method", a simple protocol inspired by a classified surgery on deaf people from the 1950s...
Most People Don't Have The Guts To Try This:
An amazing discovery in an abandoned house in Austin, Texas: A lost book of amazing survival knowledge, believed to have been long vanished to history, has been found in a dusty drawer in the house which belonged to a guy named Claude Davis.
Remember... back in those days, there was no electricity... no refrigerators... no law enforcement... and certainly no grocery store or supermarkets... Some of these exceptional skills are hundreds of years of old and they were learned the hard way by the early pioneers.
