Here’s an interesting video from Kirsten Dirksen showing a 100% off-grid home made from two shipping containers. The home is on top of a mountain in the Australia.
This container home is entirely off the grid, with no municipal water or electrical supply. The electricity comes from solar, with 12 x 250W panels and two banks of T-105 lead-acid batteries; the type that are used in golf carts. These are not maintenance-free batteries. The appliances (apart from modem and phone chargers) are “normal” household ones rather than 12V, with an inverter providing the power. Paul says that it is very rare that he needs to run the generator.
One of the containers has a rainwater collection system on the roof. The rainwater catchment roof is attached with regular scaffolding and also doubles as a shade structure keeping the sun off the roof.
We learn that our intrepid couple are used to the remote life, having lived in north-east Scotland. Moving from there to Australia for a work opportunity was a big change with the promist of adventure, but they quickly discovered that the suburban life was sapping all the joy out of their existence – so they opted for taking the bold step of purchasing 2 x 40 foot shipping containers.
After a significant challenge finding a suitable plot of land, they were fortunate to locate a landowner who let them have a space “to go play” in return for doing some work on the property. Perfect situation!
One of the joys of shipping containers is that they are very “modular”. You can stack them, join them, cut window spaces wherever you like and bolt fittings into them with ease. We learn that our homemakers have no formal training in home building but a general background in DIY and a ‘positive mindset’ – the attitude that anyone can learn to do anything.
However Paul explains that as much effort ultimately goes into one of these homes as a regular house – because you need real insulation, running water and all the other various systems that you would have in ordinary housing. Looks like he is doing almost everything himself!
Another benefit of a shipping container is that the high ceilings (I think either 8′ or 9’6″ depending on the type) facilitate putting in several inches thick insulation – which is vital if you are going to be living in a metal box, which would be boiling in summer and freezing in winter!
We learn that the project has taken over three years – but this is in addition to doing a full time job and purchasing materials whenever the funds are there to do so. Paul used recycled materials wherever possible. The total estimated cost was around $80,000 AUD (around $61,000 USD).
