Glow sticks are not just for kids playing or for concerts, parties, and clubs. Their worth can also be maximized during survival situations. By definition, a glow stick is a self-sufficient, short term source of light. It is a small closed tube that contains substances that makes light through chemiluminescence.
The advantages of glow sticks are that they are waterproof, non-flammable, inexpensive, disposable, do not require batteries and they have a long shelf life. They are also astonishingly cheap and we just located a pack of 100 8″ glow stick bracelets on Amazon for $9.99, which is 10c each!
1. Emergency light. If you don’t have candles or flashlights with you, glow sticks could save you.
2. Fishing. When you’re fishing at night, attach a glow stick at the end of your pole. Fish are attracted to light so this may help you catch fish.
3. Tripping hazards marker. Hang it on your tent lines to avoid tripping on them.
4. Bracelet for kids. When it’s dark, let your kids wear them as a bracelet. THis will not only help you see them more easily, it can cheer and calm them when they are afraid of the dark.
5. Water hazards marker. Use glow sticks to mark specific hazards at shore particularly logs or rocks. This will help you especially when you go fishing at night.
6. Location marker. Use the glow sticks as a location marker in emergency situations to attract attention from rescuers.
7. Keeping the group together when on an adventure. Use them to follow a group or to find a companion that is lost in the dark.
8. Mark openings, stairs etc. In a power outage, you can place the glow sticks to mark door openings inside your home so that members of the family can easily navigate at night.
If we had one criticism of glow sticks it’s that they are not exactly eco-friendly.. but keeping a few for a survival tool seems a valuable use of them.
